Rhobell Fawr & Dduallt are personal favourites of Mountain Craft. The two mountains are so central and obvious in Eryri/Snowdonia yet they are far quieter than almost every other major summit in the area. Rhobell Fawr is what remains of an ancient volcano and it's sister, Dduallt, forms a standalone ridge with a steep & rocky east face.
We will meet in the vicinity of Coed-y-Brenin before driving into the remote road end in the valley of Cwm yr Allt Lwyd where we start our walk. The circuit sounds modest on paper at around 13km with under 1000m of height gain but the terrain can be tough at times with intricate route finding around rocks & streams. The route starts along the Afon Mawddach river then crosses it to ascend the unspoilt north ridge of Dduallt, we then descent the ridge south before passing through forestry to the slopes of Rhobell Fawr. We walk alongside ancient drystone walls to reach the summit of Rhobell Fawr and on our way back to the valley we are able to walk over a couple of smaller hill summits.
These two wild mountains are very underrated and you will amazed by the quiet & solitude. We will pass right by two major river source locations of the Dee & Mawddach, experience a unique elevated view of central Eryri/Snowdonia and if you have any interest in geology there are rock formations with some fascinating snapshots of the past.
