The Tarren Hills

60 British pounds
Corris Uchaf near Dolgellau, Gwynedd.

Open dates 2025: Thursday 14th August 2025 This event is now guaranteed to run! The Tarren Range, sometimes referred to as The Tarren Hills, occupies the upland area between Cadair Idris and the Afon Dyfi (River Dovey). The two high points of Tarren y Gesail (667m) & Tarrenhendre (633m) are actually mountains over 2000ft and are in fact the most southerly mountains in Snowdonia. The terrain, the outlook and the unheard nature of The Tarren Range makes for a superb day of exploration. This guided walk begins in Corris Uchaf, less than a 5 minute drive from the idyllic village of Corris itself, surrounded by steep-sided forested hills. With a good mixture of mountain walking & forestry tracks, we take in a circuit of just over 20km with 1000-1400 metres of ascent depending on whether we include the additional summit of Graig Goch (586m). The Tarren Range really is a special place to explore and sees very few visitors. The view from the high tops is pretty unique, not even 10km north is a close-up view of Cadair Idris, yet to the south & east the ground drops away with a higher mountain not seen apart from the bulk of Pumlumon on a fine day. The hills & mountains of the Tarren ARE actually quite accessible due to the logging roads in the plantations, yet when you rise above the forests there is a big feeling of remoteness and solitude. The summits themselves are linked together by a series of sweeping grassy ridges and the best part is that all of this is hidden from below due to the steep & forested topography of the valleys. Private bookings: If you would like to book a private guided day on The Tarren Hills then please browse availability and book under Activities > Solitude in the Mountains > Guided Walks: Dolgellau. Individual bookings: Spaces are £60 per person and are available to be booked right now, once you have booked on one of our open events your place is guaranteed.
