010: The Rhinogydd 700s

SOLITUDE 010: THE RHINOGYDD 700S Saturday 17th July 2027 £95 per person | Maximum 6 | Jacob-led Solitude is a numbered collection of mountain days chosen because I think they are genuinely worth doing. For Solitude 010 we return to one of Mountain Craft’s most popular big days, linking all four of the Rhinogydd’s 700 metre summits. THE ROUTE We’ll meet at The Victoria Inn in Llanbedr before consolidating into one or two vehicles and driving deep into Cwm Nantcol to the route start near Maes y Garnedd farm. From there we’ll link Rhinog Fawr, Rhinog Fach, Y Llethr and Diffwys in a demanding circuit of around 20km with roughly 1,500m of ascent. The numbers do not tell the whole story. Expect deep heather, boulders, bog, rocky steps, steep ground and long sections where progress is much slower than the map suggests. Rhinog Fawr and Rhinog Fach provide the roughest, most intricate terrain before the route opens onto the broader high ground of Y Llethr and Diffwys. WHY THIS DAY? This route has repeatedly proved popular for good reason. It combines four substantial summits with some of the wildest walking terrain in Wales, all in a range that still feels remarkably quiet compared with the better-known parts of Eryri. It is one of the biggest and most rewarding days in the Solitude collection. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE You should have good hill fitness and previous experience of long mountain days. You need to be comfortable on steep, rocky, wet and often pathless terrain, and happy using your hands occasionally on steeper ground.
