008: Nantlle Ridge

SOLITUDE 008: NANTLLE RIDGE Saturday 1st May 2027 £95 per person | Maximum 6 | Jacob-led Solitude is a numbered collection of mountain days chosen because I think they are genuinely worth doing. Usually quieter, rougher and a little less obvious than the classic Eryri routes, each edition explores a different corner of the mountains in a small group. For Solitude 008 we take on one of the finest mountain journeys in Eryri: the Nantlle Ridge. THE ROUTE Starting from Rhyd Ddu, we’ll climb onto Y Garn before following the ridge west across Mynydd Drws-y-Coed, Trum y Ddysgl and Mynydd Tal-y-Mignedd towards Craig Cwm Silyn. For the full journey, we can continue across the western end of the ridge towards Garnedd-goch and Mynydd Graig Goch, with the final line and finish arranged around the group, weather and conditions. Expect steep ascents, narrow ridges, rough mountain paths and sections of straightforward hands-on scrambling. The terrain constantly changes as the ridge rises and falls above the Nantlle valleys. WHY THIS DAY? The Nantlle Ridge is not particularly obscure. It is simply too good to leave out. It has everything I want from a Solitude day: a proper journey, changing terrain, rocky ridges, big views and considerably fewer people than the famous ridges around Yr Wyddfa and the Glyderau. It also feels like travelling through the mountains rather than simply climbing a summit and coming back down. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE You should have good hill fitness and previous experience of full mountain days. There are exposed rocky sections and straightforward scrambling along the ridge, so you should be comfortable with heights and using your hands on steep ground. Previous scrambling experience is useful but not essential. WHAT’S INCLUDED A full mountain day led by Jacob in a maximum group of six. Route choice, pacing and mountain judgement throughout the day.
