What is a long distance hike?

While there is no official rule, I categorise my long-distance challenges into two distinct styles:

Ultra-Endurance (Single Day): These are continuous "big days" out, usually covering 40km (25 miles) or more in one push. These often involve 12 to 24 hours of moving time which is perfect for those testing their physical and mental limits.

Multi-Day Expeditions: We break the distance down over several days, often involving mountain wild camps or local accommodation. This allows you to truly immerse yourself in the landscape.

Many of my routes, such as the Snowdon: Sea to Summit (45k) or Brenig Way (50k), can be tackled in either style. If you aren't sure which pace suits you, get in touch and we can discuss the best approach for your experience level.

Do you run Three Peaks Challenges?

While I don’t offer the National Three Peaks as a standard "off-the-shelf" package, I specialize in providing expert guiding for private groups who want to tackle the mountains the right way.

High-Performance Alternatives: If you are looking for a true mountain test without the 10 hours of driving, I highly recommend the Welsh 3000s or Snowdon: Sea to Summit (45km).

Bespoke UK & Ireland Expeditions: I am available for private guiding across all the major mountain ranges. Whether you are bagging Scottish Munros in the Highlands, ticking off Lakeland Wainwrights, or exploring the Irish Mountains like the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, I can handle the technical navigation and mountain safety for your project.

Guide-Only Service: For the Welsh Three Peaks or specific legs of a national challenge, I can provide professional guiding, route planning, and safety logistics.

Absolutely. The challenges listed on my site are the ones I run most frequently, but I am available to guide any major mountain or long-distance project across the UK and Ireland.

Whether you are looking for a fully supported multi-day trek or a guided attempt at a classic mountain round, I can manage the logistics, safety, and pacing. Examples of routes I can guide include:

Mountain Rounds: The Paddy Buckley Round (Eryri), Bob Graham Round (Lake District), and Ramsay’s Round (Scotland).

National Trails: The Cambrian Way, West Highland Way, and the Coast to Coast.

Regional Classics: The Snowdonia Slate Trail, Beacons Way, and the Pilgrims Way.

Will I need to train?

The best way to prepare for the mountains is to spend time in the mountains. A solid baseline of cardiovascular fitness and leg strength is essential for an enjoyable day on the hill.

Challenge Events: For my single-day endurance challenges, I recommend that you have completed a hike covering at least 50% of the target distance on similar terrain within the last couple of months.

The Welsh 3000s & Hiraethog Trail: These are elite-level days. If you are booking these, your training should focus on sustained ascent and "time on feet" to prepare for 16–24 hours of movement.

Bespoke Advice: I’m always happy to discuss your current fitness levels and suggest a "stepping stone" peak if you're building up to a bigger goal.

How do I get back to the start? Is the route supported?

Accepted Answer

Logistics vary depending on the length and nature of the challenge:

Point-to-Point Challenges: For routes that don't finish where they start, I can advise on the best local transport options or help coordinate logistics between participants' vehicles before the day begins.

Mid-Way Support: For my premier single-day endurance challenges (like the 45k Sea to Summit), I typically arrange for a support vehicle to meet us at a strategic mid-way point.

The Benefit of Support: This pit-stop allows you to refuel, drop or swap kit, and have a brief rest. It also serves as a mobile safety hub for the event.

Please note that for insurance and legal reasons, I do not provide a taxi or shuttle service for participants. All transport arrangements are coordinated as part of the pre-event logistics.
