014: The Berwyn Mountains

SOLITUDE 014: THE BERWYN MOUNTAINS FROM PISTYLL RHAEADR Saturday 11th December 2027 £95 per person | Maximum 6 | Jacob-led Solitude is a numbered collection of mountain days chosen because I think they are genuinely worth doing. For Solitude 014 we start beneath Pistyll Rhaeadr and head into the high country of the Berwyn Mountains for the final edition of 2027. THE ROUTE From the foot of the waterfall we’ll climb into the upper valley towards Llyn Lluncaws before gaining the high ground around Moel Sych and Cadair Berwyn. The aim is a substantial circuit rather than a quick summit outing, using the surrounding ridges and open upland to create a proper mountain journey. Expect steep climbing, rough and boggy ground, broad ridges and long stretches of open country. The exact line will depend on weather, ground conditions and the group. WHY THIS DAY? Pistyll Rhaeadr is famous. The mountains above it are much less so. Within a short distance of the waterfall the landscape opens into quiet, spacious upland, with Llyn Lluncaws tucked beneath the ridge and huge views across Mid Wales. It is a fitting final Solitude of the year: start somewhere spectacular, then keep walking until almost everyone else has disappeared. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE You should have good hill fitness and be comfortable with a full day involving significant ascent on steep, wet and rough mountain ground. Previous hill walking experience is strongly recommended. No scrambling experience is required. WHAT’S INCLUDED A full mountain day led by Jacob in a maximum group of six.
