SOLITUDE 012: THE TARREN HILLS
Saturday 9th October 2027
£95 per person | Maximum 6 | Jacob-led
Solitude is a numbered collection of mountain days chosen because I think they are genuinely worth doing.
For Solitude 012 we head into the wild upland between Cadair Idris and the Afon Dyfi for a big circuit of the Tarren Hills.
THE ROUTE
Starting from Corris Uchaf, this is a substantial mountain journey of around 20km with roughly 1,000 to 1,400m of ascent, depending on the final line.
We’ll move from forestry tracks and steep-sided valleys onto the open ridges linking Tarren y Gesail and Tarrenhendre.
For a strong group in good conditions, there may be the option to extend the day towards Graig Goch.
Expect long climbs, rough ground, changing terrain and a day that feels much bigger than these relatively modest mountains might suggest.
WHY THIS DAY?
The Tarren Hills are among the most southerly high mountains in Eryri, yet they are routinely overlooked.
The ridges are broad and quiet, with huge views towards Cadair Idris, Pumlumon and Mid Wales, while the steep forested valleys below give the whole area a surprisingly remote feel.
It is hidden mountain country in the truest sense, sitting just above roads thousands of people drive every year without ever really noticing what is there.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
This is one of the tougher Solitude days.
You should have good hill fitness and be comfortable with around 20km, significant ascent and some rough or pathless ground.
Previous experience of full mountain days is strongly recommended.
No scrambling experience is required.
WHAT’S INCLUDED
A full mountain day led by Jacob in a maximum group of six.
Pre-event advice on kit, weather, travel and meeting arrangements.
