009: Aran Fawddwy & Glasgwm

SOLITUDE 009: ARAN FAWDDWY & GLASGWM Saturday 5th June 2027 £95 per person | Maximum 6 | Jacob-led Solitude is a numbered collection of mountain days chosen because I think they are genuinely worth doing. Usually quieter, rougher and a little less obvious than the classic Eryri routes, each edition explores a different corner of the mountains in a small group. For Solitude 009 we head deep into Cwm Cywarch for a big journey over Aran Fawddwy and Glasgwm. THE ROUTE Starting beneath the dramatic cliffs at the head of Cwm Cywarch, we’ll climb out of the valley and onto the high ground of the Aran mountains. The aim is to link Aran Fawddwy, the highest summit in southern Eryri, with the much quieter Glasgwm to create a substantial circuit through one of the least busy major mountain ranges in Wales. Expect steep climbing, broad grassy ridges, rough paths, boggy ground and long stretches of open mountain terrain. The return to Cwm Cywarch gives the day a proper sense of journey rather than simply climbing one summit and retracing our steps. The exact line may change with the weather, ground conditions and the group. WHY THIS DAY? Aran Fawddwy is over 900 metres high, yet it can feel almost forgotten compared with mountains of similar height further north. Cwm Cywarch is an extraordinary starting point in its own right, enclosed by huge crags before opening onto the much broader uplands above. Adding Glasgwm makes this a bigger, less obvious and far more interesting day, with a real sense of space throughout. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE You should have good hill fitness and be comfortable with a long mountain day involving significant ascent. Previous hill walking experience is strongly recommended, along with confidence on steep, rough, wet and occasionally pathless ground. No scrambling experience is required.
