The Aran Ridge / Crib yr Aran

Open dates 2026: Sunday 14th June 2026 Thursday 27th August 2026 These events are now guaranteed to run! Crib yr Aran, or the Aran Ridge, is one of the finest mountain walks in Wales. The prominent ridge, which can be seen for miles around, rises up from the shore of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake) and leads of the 905 metre summit of Aran Fawddwy which at just under 3000 feet is the highest mountain in Wales south of Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon. The varied terrain, outstanding views and isolation of the Aran mountain range will show you a whole new side to walking in Eryri/Snowdonia. We meet close to Bala in the village of Llanuwchllyn, the route we take follows farmland tracks then moorland before the terrain becomes rocky and mountainous. Walking the ridge out-and-back is a total of around 17km with just under 1000 metres of total ascent. A circular route descending under the eastern side of the ridge is also possible on the day at around 20km but this will largely depend on the weather and capabilities of the open group members. The route itself is genuinely breath-taking: huge cliffs dive 200 metres down into the valleys to the east, panoramic views of mountains near & far, unique rock formations on the ridge and a sense of solitude that is tough to beat in Wales. Required Experience: This is a physically demanding day, even for seasoned mountain walkers. You should be comfortable on pathless & rocky terrain plus experience of walking 15km in a day.
