Arenig Fawr & Moel Llyfnant

75 British pounds
Arenig, Bala, LL23 7PB (Lay-by Opposite Gravel Farm Track)

The Arenig Traverse: Central Wilderness Route 2026 Open Group Dates: Wednesday 26th August 2026 Saturday 10th October 2026 £75 per person | Small Group Journey | Max 6 | Guaranteed to Run The Arenig mountains are seriously overlooked, especially for a range sitting so clearly in the heart of Eryri. Arenig Fawr reaches 854m and stands proud above Llyn Celyn, with a long, distinctive summit ridge. Moel Llyfnant offers a wilder contrast, giving a quieter, rougher mountain experience away from the busier central peaks. THE ROUTE Starting near Llyn Celyn, just ten minutes from Bala, we follow a moorland track towards the dark, isolated waters of Llyn Arenig Fawr and its tiny bothy. From there, we ascend Arenig Fawr before crossing rougher, more open ground towards Moel Llyfnant. The main loop is around 16km with roughly 900m of ascent, but the pathless sections make it feel more substantial than the numbers suggest. For strong groups in good conditions, there may be the option to include Gallt y Daren, extending the day beyond 20km. HIGHLIGHTS Arenig Fawr Summit: Reach one of the most distinctive mountains in central Eryri, often seen from afar but far less often visited. History and Heritage: Visit the Second World War air crash memorial and pass beneath the dark cliffs of Simdde Ddu. Moel Llyfnant: A quieter, rougher summit that gives the day a real sense of space and isolation. A Bigger Option: For strong groups, Gallt y Daren can turn the route into a longer and more committing mountain journey. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE You should be comfortable with a full mountain day of around 16km and 900m of ascent. Previous hill walking experience is strongly recommended. You do not need scrambling experience, but you should be happy with rough, wet, pathless and uneven ground. WHAT’S INCLUDED A full day of expert guiding in a small group. Coaching on movement, pacing and route judgement on rough mountain ground. Pre-event advice on kit, travel and local logistics. PRIVATE BOOKINGS Looking for a private Arenig day or a different date?
