Cadair Berwyn & Pistyll Rhaeadr
Open dates 2026: Good Friday 3rd April 2026 This event is now guaranteed to run! The Berwynion occupy a huge upland area across the Welsh counties of Powys, Denbighsire & Wrexham. And yes - these are mountains! The summit of Cadair Berwyn at 832 metres is the highest mountain in Wales outside of any of the national parks. It's a special place on the edge of the country, to the east the hills drop off into Shropshire as far as you can see, whereas to the west the high mountains of Eryri can be easily visible on a good day. It's worth bearing in mind that the route is comparable to walks on the higher ranges, the walk is over 14km long and we ascend almost 1000 metres in total. Meeting in the village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, we make our way to the car park at the famed waterfall of Pistyll Rhaeadr which is must be one of the most beautiful falls in Wales. Tearing ourselves away from the draw of the cascade, a path leads upwards to the north, reaching Llyn Lluncaws underneath the craggy east face of Moel Sych 827m. Now on the Berwyn ridge we move north again, first to the high point of Cadair Berwyn 832m and then a longer stretch to the remote top of Cadair Bronwen 783m. Our return involves some back-tracking to Moel Sych, from which we descend the broad south ridge, in the lower section a path sneaks off to a great viewpoint at the top of Pistyll Rhaeadr. This is an amazing day of walking, plenty of people bring up the Berwynion in conversation but few actually make the effort to get out there and experience the range in person.
