The Selection team voted, and the objective remains Pumlumon: the vast, quiet and often featureless heart of the Cambrian Mountains. This is not a rehearsed tourist trail. It is an exploratory reconnaissance day where you walk alongside a professional Mountain Leader, interpreting the map, reading the ground, finding the line and making route decisions in real time. THE ROUTE Starting deep in the Cambrians, we will make a rough mountain journey onto the Pumlumon massif. Expect wild moorland, wet ground, deep bog, faint trods and broad, open slopes where navigation and judgement matter. The path may fade early, and movement is likely to be slow, deliberate and demanding. The exact route will depend on the weather, group, access and underfoot conditions. HIGHLIGHTS Live Decision Making: See how route choices are made when the ground is unfamiliar and the way ahead is not obvious. Trackless Terrain: A quiet, open landscape that demands constant interpretation and awareness. Remote Mid Wales: A very different feel from the busier mountains of Eryri, with bigger space and fewer people. The Craft in Action: A chance to see how map, compass, terrain, weather and judgement all come together on the hill. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE This is a physically demanding day. You will need strong hill fitness, patience and resilience for rough, wet and boggy ground. Full waterproofs with taped seams are mandatory. You must be prepared for sustained exposure to wet, uneven and remote terrain. WHAT’S INCLUDED A full day of expert guiding in a small group.
