This is where navigation stops being isolated exercises and becomes part of a complete mountain day. The group will be given an objective and a broad area. From there, you will help shape the route, choose lines, share navigation and make decisions as the terrain, weather and day unfold. I’ll coach, question and manage the wider safety framework, but the group will do the navigating. THE JOURNEY Expect a largely off-path route through rough, complex or vague terrain. There may be no tidy ridge, famous summit or obvious trail to follow. Progress depends on interpreting the map, reading the ground and making sensible route choices. You’ll use whatever combination of contours, handrails, attack points, bearings, pacing, timing and relocation the journey requires. The point is to make good decisions across a real mountain journey. CORE HIGHLIGHTS Group-led route planning before setting out. Shared navigation and decision making throughout the day. Route choice across real mountain terrain. Coaching and feedback without simply following from the front. WHY MOUNTAIN CRAFT? Navigation becomes useful when you can apply it while also dealing with terrain, weather, fatigue and route choice. The Journey gives you space to make those decisions yourself while still having experienced support around the group. Each month uses a different area, so returning participants can build judgement on new ground. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE Reading the Ground is strongly recommended before The Journey. Experienced navigators may book independently. I may contact you beforehand to check the day is appropriate. You will need good hill fitness, resilience on rough ground and suitable kit for a full mountain day.
