WHEN THE PATH FADES: READING THE GROUND A Saturday skills leveller for map, compass, terrain and routecraft beyond obvious paths. 2026/27 OPEN GROUP DATES Saturday 7 November 2026 Saturday 5 December 2026 Saturday 9 January 2027 Saturday 6 February 2027 Saturday 13 March 2027 £95 per person | Maximum 1:6 ratio | Full mountain day Reading the Ground is the Saturday daytime part of When the Path Fades. This is a practical mountain day built around the navigation techniques that are genuinely useful on British hills once the path becomes faint, visibility closes in or the ground stops giving easy answers. The aim is not to overload you with dozens of disconnected methods. We focus on a smaller set of dependable skills and use them repeatedly in real terrain until they begin to work together. THE SESSION We begin by establishing what the group already knows, correcting weak habits and creating a shared foundation. From there, the terrain becomes progressively rougher, vaguer and less dependent on obvious paths. The day may include map orientation, contour interpretation, bearings, pacing, timing, handrails, attack points, relocation and route choice. The emphasis is on choosing the right tool for the situation, not collecting techniques for the sake of it. CORE HIGHLIGHTS Reading slopes, ridges, drainage and changes in gradient. Relocating calmly when the map and ground stop matching expectations. Choosing lines that suit the terrain and conditions. Building confidence away from marked paths. WHY BOOK WITH MOUNTAIN CRAFT? Good navigation is not about staring at a compass all day. It is about observation, judgement and knowing which technique matters at the right moment. Each monthly weekend uses a different venue and different ground. Attend once as a complete progression, or return later to apply the same core skills in a new landscape. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE You do not need advanced navigation experience. Some hillwalking experience and basic familiarity with a map are helpful. You will need reasonable hill fitness and suitable kit for a full autumn or winter mountain day.
