Experiment #003: One Square

10 hr
245 British pounds
Rhinogydd

One mountain day. One OS grid square. We do not leave it. Saturday 10 April 2027 £245 per person | 1 place remaining | Jacob-led £100 deposit One Square is a full mountain day built entirely inside a single OS 1km grid square somewhere in the Rhinogydd. The square, route and structure are kept secret. The point is to see just how much mountain can be hidden inside one kilometre. The square will be specifically selected, recce’d and designed around because it contains enough rough, intricate and varied terrain to build a complete 8–10 hour mountain day without leaving its boundary. THE RULE One mountain day. One OS grid square. We do not leave it. There is no summit list to complete and this is not a navigation course. I’ll design and lead a complete journey through the square, using its ridges, broken ground, hidden lines and natural features to build the strongest possible day from a deliberately tiny area. You won’t know which square has been chosen beforehand, what line we will take through it, or exactly how I have chosen to use it. Phones and photography are fine, but we will not use GPS navigation or record the route as we go. THE TERRAIN Expect rough, intricate and potentially technical ground. The day may involve steep terrain, pathless movement, awkward sections, scrambling and repeated changes of direction. Distance is secondary. The objective is to find out how much genuine mountain terrain and movement can exist inside one kilometre when the obvious option of simply walking somewhere else has been removed. Allow around 8–10 hours. The exact meeting point will be confirmed closer to the date. THE REVEAL At the end, the square and our complete route through it will be revealed. Each person will also receive a physical record of the square afterwards. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE You need solid hill fitness and should be comfortable with a full day on steep, rough and pathless mountain ground. You do not need to be an expert scrambler or navigator, but this is not suitable for complete beginners. BOOKING £245 per person. £100 deposit secures your place. The £145 balance is due 12 weeks before the event. Maximum 4 places.
