011: Pumlumon

SOLITUDE 011: PUMLUMON Sunday 5th September 2027 £95 per person | Maximum 6 | Jacob-led Solitude is a numbered collection of mountain days chosen because I think they are genuinely worth doing. For Solitude 011 we head into Pumlumon, the broad, remote uplands of the Cambrian Mountains and the highest ground in Mid Wales. THE ROUTE Starting from Eisteddfa Gurig, we’ll build a substantial circuit across the Pumlumon plateau, taking in Pen Pumlumon Fawr and continuing across the quieter tops towards Pen Pumlumon Llygad-bychan and Pen Pumlumon Arwystli. Depending on the group and conditions, the journey may also include Y Garn and Pumlumon Fach. Expect broad ridges, peat, rough grass, boggy ground and long stretches of open country where paths can become faint or disappear altogether. A similar full circuit from Eisteddfa Gurig is around 17 to 18km. WHY THIS DAY? Pumlumon is enormous, open and strangely overlooked. Three major rivers rise from these hills, yet away from the main summit it is possible to spend hours crossing high ground with very little sign of anyone else. The appeal is not dramatic scrambling or sharp ridges. It is scale, space and the feeling of travelling through a huge, quiet landscape. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE You should have reasonable hill fitness and be comfortable with a full day on wet, rough and sometimes pathless ground. Previous hill walking experience is strongly recommended.
