007: Cnicht & the Moelwynion

SOLITUDE 007: CNICHT & THE MOELWYNION Saturday 24th April 2027 £95 per person | Maximum 6 | Jacob-led Solitude is a numbered collection of mountain days chosen because I think they are genuinely worth doing. Usually quieter, rougher and a little less obvious than the classic Eryri routes, each edition explores a different corner of the mountains in a small group. For Solitude 007 we head into the Moelwynion for a full circuit linking Cnicht, Moelwyn Mawr and Moelwyn Bach. THE ROUTE Starting from Croesor, we’ll climb the distinctive ridge of Cnicht before continuing into the quieter heart of the Moelwynion. From there, the route crosses rough mountain ground towards Moelwyn Mawr before continuing onto Moelwyn Bach and eventually dropping back towards Croesor. It is a proper circuit rather than a simple summit day, linking three very different mountains through a landscape of rocky ridges, hidden lakes, rough moorland and old quarry workings. Expect a full day on varied terrain, including steep paths, rough ground, boggy sections and some straightforward scrambling around Cnicht. The exact line may change slightly with the weather and conditions, but the intention is to complete the full three-summit circuit. WHY THIS DAY? Cnicht is well known. The full circuit across the Moelwynion is much less commonly done. Linking Cnicht with Moelwyn Mawr and Moelwyn Bach turns it into a far more satisfying mountain journey, with big changes in terrain and character throughout the day. The old quarry landscape adds another layer too, with traces of the slate industry scattered through what is now some wonderfully quiet mountain country. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE You should have reasonable hill fitness and previous experience of full mountain days. There is some straightforward scrambling terrain around Cnicht, so you should be happy using your hands occasionally on rocky ground. No previous scrambling experience is required. You should also be comfortable on rough, wet and sometimes pathless terrain. WHAT’S INCLUDED A full mountain day led by Jacob in a maximum group of six.
