005: Yr Eifl & the Gyrns

SOLITUDE 005: YR EIFL & THE GYRNS Saturday 20th February 2027 £95 per person | Maximum 6 | Jacob-led Solitude is a numbered collection of mountain days chosen because I think they are genuinely worth doing. Usually quieter, rougher and a little less obvious than the classic Eryri routes, each edition explores a different corner of the mountains in a small group. For Solitude 005 we head to the northern Llŷn Peninsula for an ambitious journey linking Gyrn Ddu, Gyrn Goch, Tre’r Ceiri and Yr Eifl. THE ROUTE This is much more than the usual short walk to Tre’r Ceiri. Starting from Trefor, we’ll build a substantial journey across the rough hills above the coast, taking in the boulder-strewn tops of Gyrn Ddu and Gyrn Goch before continuing into the higher Yr Eifl massif. Tre’r Ceiri brings a completely different character to the day. Its remarkably well-preserved Iron Age hillfort sits high above Llŷn, with substantial stone ramparts and the remains of numerous roundhouses still visible. From there, Yr Eifl gives us the highest point of the journey and huge views across the peninsula, Cardigan Bay and towards Eryri. The precise line and final route will depend on the weather, group and ground conditions, but the aim is a proper traverse rather than simply collecting four summits by their shortest routes. WHY THIS DAY? This little group of mountains packs an absurd amount into a relatively small area. There is rough pathless ground, enormous coastal views, rocky summits, old quarry landscapes and one of the most impressive prehistoric hillforts in Wales. Gyrn Ddu and Gyrn Goch in particular are rarely combined with the much better-known Yr Eifl and Tre’r Ceiri, which makes the full journey exactly the sort of slightly unconventional day Solitude is for. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE You should have good hill fitness and be comfortable with a full day on steep, rocky, rough and sometimes pathless terrain. Previous hill walking experience is strongly recommended. No scrambling experience is required. WHAT’S INCLUDED A full mountain day led by Jacob in a maximum group of six.
