002: Waun-oer, Maesglase & Cribin Fawr

SOLITUDE 002: WAUN-OER, MAESGLASE & CRIBIN FAWR Saturday 21st November 2026 £95 per person | Maximum 6 | Jacob-led Solitude is a numbered collection of mountain days chosen because I think they are genuinely worth doing. Usually quieter, rougher and a little less obvious than the classic Eryri routes, each edition explores a different corner of the mountains in a small group. For Solitude 002 we head to the hills above Dinas Mawddwy for a journey across Waun-oer, Maesglase and Cribin Fawr. THE ROUTE This is a wonderfully overlooked piece of mountain country on the southern edge of Eryri. We’ll link the broad ridges, steep-sided cwms and rough ground around Maesglase, Cribin Fawr and Waun-oer to create a substantial mountain journey through terrain that sees a fraction of the traffic of the better-known ranges further north. Expect grassy ridges, steep ground, rough sections, big views and plenty of time away from obvious paths. The exact line may change with the weather and conditions, but the aim is a proper journey through this distinctive group of hills rather than simply taking the quickest route between summits. WHY THIS DAY? Maesglase is one of those mountains that deserves far more attention than it gets. Together with Waun-oer and Cribin Fawr it creates a varied and satisfying day with a real sense of space and isolation, particularly in late autumn when the mountains are quieter. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE You should have reasonable hill fitness and be comfortable walking for a full day on steep, rough and sometimes pathless mountain ground. No scrambling experience is required.
