Cadair Idris Circular
Open dates 2026: Sunday 26th July 2026 Sunday 6th September 2026 These events are now guaranteed to run! Cadair Idris, one of the most well-known Welsh mountains, is simply legendary. Towering above Dolgellau & the Mawddach estuary, the long ridge-like mountain can be seen from much of Snowdonia and is located in the southern-most portion of the national park. Whilst Cadair Idris doesn't meet the criteria to be a 3000er, just missing out at 893m / 2929ft, it has a huge drop or prominence of over 600m to it's next highest neighbour, one of only 5 mountains in Snowdonia with this status. The huge mountain bulk is actually comprised of a number of individual summits and our circular walk, starting & finishing in Minffordd, aims to visit the highest points. The route is around 11km long and ascends 1100 metres in total. The terrain is rocky and definitely mountainous but there is no real scrambling on the route. The summits that we traverse include: Craig Cwm Amarch 791m Cyfrwy 811m Penygadair 893m Mynydd Moel 863m There are some incredible highlights to look forward to seeing on this walk: peering down to the enchanting lake Llyn Cau from the crags above, watching the western arm of Cadair Idris sweeping out towards Cardigan Bay and looking across the entire 5 kilomotre length of the dark & desolate north face. There is a reason why so many claim Cadair Idris as their favourite Welsh mountain!
