A winding woodland track in the Clocaenog Forest on part of the Hiraethog Trail.
The spectacular Aran Fawddwy, the apex of the route, with the far southern reaches of Eryri/Snowdonia National Park beyond.

If you are looking for the crowds of Yr Wyddfa, you are in the wrong place. Aran Fawddwy is the highest peak in Wales south of the Snowdon massif, standing at an imposing 905m. Yet, it sits in a pocket of Eryri that most walkers completely ignore. This is the "Empty Quarter" of the national park.

We use this specific circular route from Llanuwchllyn for our guided days because it offers true, rugged isolation. You transition quickly from quiet farmland into a high, exposed mountain environment. The ground is often boggy, the paths are faint in the valleys, and the weather rolling in from the west can change the atmosphere in minutes. It is a proper, demanding mountain day for those who want to escape the tourist trails.

The Route Stats

  • Mountain: Aran Fawddwy (905m)

  • Distance: 19.2 km (Full Loop) or 17km (Linear Out-and-Back)

  • Ascent: 941m

  • Estimated Time: 6.5 to 7 hours

  • Terrain: Faint valley paths, exposed ridgelines, and tricky navigation on the return loop.

The Route Overview

The ascent drags you up out of the valley onto the spectacular "Dragon’s Back" ridge (Crib yr Aran), on a good day you won't be able to resist turning around every 10-minutes to admire the view of Llyn Tegid. Once you hit the ridgeline, the drop-offs to the east are dramatic, plunging 200m into the glacial valleys below. The summit itself offers an incredible 360-degree panorama over southern Eryri/Snowdonia and mid-Wales. The descent loops back in the eastern shadow of the mountain, requiring careful footing initially and a sharp eye for the line, as the valley navigation can be tricky once off of the main track.
