Combining the fantastic scramble of Crib Lem with the Carneddau ridgeline gives us a big & exciting mountain mountain circuit from Bethesda. We will reach the summit of three 3000ft mountains, climb one of the areas stand-out grade 1 ridges and scramble down into one of the best hidden cwms/valleys in the national park.
Some previous scrambling experience is required as is a good level of fitness, the route is almost 20km long with 1200m of total ascent. We will meet in the busy Gwynedd village of Bethesda, which is not far from Bangor, and walk up through the narrowing lanes to Gerlan and the edge of the mountain. A long trail leads us into the heart of the Carneddau underneath the towering cliffs of Carnedd Dafydd where we ascend the fantastic Crib Lem (AKA Llech Ddu Spur), a steep grade 1 ridge that leads us almost directly to the summit. A high level ridge walk then takes us to the summits of Carnedd Llewelyn & Yr Elen before we drop down into the beautifully remote valley of Cwm Caseg via Yr Elen's scrambly North East Ridge. A solitary and reflective walk out along the Afon Caseg river then leads us back towards Bethesda.
Our route aims to give you an introduction to the Carneddau mountains with a little more imagination than following the age old circuit from the Ogwen Valley. The scrambling is first class and once on the mountain tops it is hard to beat the wide open space feeling that you get from the Carneddau.
