The Llangollen Round is often celebrated for its scenic beauty, and for good reason, the vistas over the Dee Valley are world-class. However, over 52km, it reveals its true character as a significant endurance challenge. Last Saturday, we headed out from Trevor to open our 2026 challenge season.
North Wales provided a dynamic spring backdrop. We moved through brilliant sunshine, brief snow flurries over Moel Fferna, and sustained 40-50mph winds on the higher ridges. While these conditions make for an atmospheric day in the hills, they also demand a high level of kit discipline and mental focus.
On a long-distance mission like this, group safety and the 12-hour window are our primary benchmarks. Due to the taxing nature of the strong winds early on, we made the strategic decision to have one team member finish their journey at the 30km mark to ensure everyone remained safe and within their comfort zone as the weather moved in. A huge mention must go to Anne, who showed incredible tenacity. She maintained a consistent, professional pace through the gusts, completing the full 54km loop in just under 13 hours and remarkably, she was back out for a 10k run the following morning.
The Reality of the Stats
Total Distance: 54 km
Total Ascent: 2,000 m
Total Time: 12 hrs 45 mins
Conditions: Bright spells, intermittent snow/hail, and sustained 40-50mph winds.
Focus: Pacing, grit, and safety management.
The Route Overview
Starting and finishing in the village of Trevor, the route offers a masterclass in varied North Wales terrain. After an early climb onto the dramatic limestone escarpment above World’s End, we moved into the longest leg of the day across Llantysilio Mountain. This was where the 50mph gusts really made their presence felt, testing our pacing and kit discipline.
We then pushed into the northern Berwynion to reach Moel Fferna (630m), the only peak over 2,000ft on the circuit and the psychological heart of the journey. The final chapters of the day took us over Vivod Mountain and through a long rural descent into Froncysyllte. We eventually finished in torchlight, crossing the engineering marvel of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct to close the loop after a relentless 12 hour 45 minute journey. It is a route that rewards those who can find a steady rhythm and stick to it, regardless of what the Welsh weather throws their way.
