The Bochlwyd Horseshoe - Ogwen Valley
NEW OPEN EVENT DATES ADDED: Friday 13th June 2025 Bank Holiday Monday 25th August 2025 These events are now guaranteed to run! The planned start point is in the Ogwen Valley, on the A5 at the parking area for Tryfan. As well as experiencing a number of grade 1 scrambling routes, we'll be able to visit any summits as we go along. The route will be around 8km in distance around 1000m in ascent, this might sound modest but we will spend a significant amount of time on rocky ground - moving slowly, deliberately and safely. Depending on the timing and weather we can extend the walk to include Cwm Idwal, otherwise the A5 parking areas are never far away. The order of the day starts straight from the road on Tryfan's North Ridge, walking becomes hands-on scrambling before long and in under 2 hours we will be standing at the summit of Tryfan. An easier and shorter descent down Tryfan's South Ridge takes us to the base of the notorious Bristly Ridge. Weaving along the easiest line of weakness, gully climbing leads to open ridge scrambling and eventually the Glyderau Plateau and Glyder Fach's summit. The ragged rocky mini-summit of Castell y Gwynt is next with a short 20 metre scramble followed by a descent of the Gribin Ridge and a choice of onward paths to the valley. The Bochlwyd Horseshoe is a genuinely iconic and must-do link-up of grade 1 scrambling routes, possibly second only to the Snowdon Horseshoe & Crib Goch. If this sounds like your ideal day and if you have a head for heights as well as plenty of mountain walking experience then get yourself booked on or contact us if you'd like to discuss any aspects of the route.
